Sometime we must look at and examine our relationship with God to see where we are. Then we can worship Him with love and
understanding. If we are cold, dull, and dead in our worship we bring God a sick sacrifice. A spiritual worship shall be established, incense shall be offered to God’s name which signifies prayer, and praise. And it
shall be a pure offering, in which the true
worshippers worshipped the Father in spirit and in
truth.
The name Malachi in Hebrew means “my messenger,” it is unclear whether this is the name of the prophet or a description of his office. A theme prominent in the book is covenant. A covenant is an agreement between two people, a group and or between people and their God. Malachi gives the people a message from God as to their standing with Him. He informed them that they have violated the covenant in that they were cruel to each other, they were guilty of seeking sorcerers, they were adulterers, liars, and some were taking advantage of windows and orphans; some were inhospitable to the homeless. The prophet tells them God says these things dishonor me
Sometime we provoke God with the things we do or don’t do, with the things we say, when this happen God stands back and leave us do our own thing. We expect God to be like a bell-hop, ready to do what we ask Him to do. We want Him to heal our body , save our children, visit the sick, go to the hospital, feed the hungry, etc. We want God to do everything that He saved us to do. God says through the prophet tell the people who I Am just in case they forgot; for “I Am the Lord, and I change not”, that’s why the people had not been consumed, because God is a merciful God. That why they were still alive, because God keeps His end of the agreement, and He promise never to destroyed mankind again. The prophet says that the people have a long history of dishonoring God’s command; you haven’t done a thing I told you.
The prophet admonishes the people to return to God, so He can return to them the relationship has to be a reciprocal one; you see, we walk away from God. He does not leave us for God is the same yesterday, today and forever. He is in the same place He was when you left to do your own thing. God is reasoning with the people to return to Him, He is reasoning from His own nature because He is a merciful God. God tells the people to return to Him, because the people had turned away from the statues of God. You have ceased from seeking the Spirit, you have not done things the way we agreed. You must seek my Spirit who will lead you, guide you, teach you, tell you what and what not to do. You have hardened your hearts, but God says you have not been dealt with as you deserved because of my mercy.
Yet God plea with the people to return to Him and repent and stopped robbing Him, they wanted to know how have we robbed you? In tithes and offering, the people had stopped bringing their offering to the temple, they were robbing Him because they were not giving Him the first fruits; God did not need their offering, but this supported the priests; and a part was required for the support of the poor.
You might be like the Israelites saying how can we return, begin God says by being honest. What did He mean by that? He asked the question do honest people rob God. They asked how we have robbed you. God answered in tithes and offering, you are cursed with a curse: for you have robbed me. God says through the prophet you have ceased to keep the covenant that I made with your fathers, you have turned aside from my statutes. You have hardened your hearts as your fathers did return to me and I will return to you. Bring the full tithes to the temple, so there will be ample provision in my temple, God says to the people; try me come back to me and see what I will do for you. God say He will open the very windows of heaven and pour out blessing beyond your wildest dreams. God says not only that but He will defend you, He will fight your battle, He will protect you, for He is the Lord and He change not, what I said I will do, “I will do.”
God has kept His part of the covenant, He sent His Son so that we can have life in all its abundant. He has provided eternal life, for all those who believe and received His son as their savior. As we partake of the body and blood of our savior we remember the covenant and the agreement between God and His people.
